Exosomes are produced by virtually every cell type in the body and serve as a mechanism of intercellular communication that extends beyond direct cell-to-cell contact. A cell that needs to communicate with a distant cell packages a selection of its proteins, lipids, messenger RNA, and regulatory microRNA into a lipid bilayer vesicle that is then secreted into the extracellular space. Recipient cells take up these vesicles and respond to their molecular cargo, altering their behavior in response to the signals received.
Stem cell-derived exosomes used in aesthetic treatments are particularly potent because stem cells produce exosomes loaded with the signaling molecules that drive tissue regeneration, including growth factors, anti-inflammatory cytokines, Wnt pathway proteins, and microRNAs that upregulate collagen production, promote angiogenesis, and suppress senescence in aging cells.
