to Suffer Through It
A urinary tract infection is one of the most common infections adults experience, and one of the most uncomfortable. The burning, the urgency, the pain, and the pressure do not need to wait until Monday morning or until you can get into a specialist. At Superior Health Medical and Wellness, Dr. Akers can see you the same day, confirm your diagnosis, and get you started on the right antibiotic, fast.
Not all UTIs are the same, and not all urinary symptoms mean the same thing. Dr. Akers evaluates your specific symptoms, orders appropriate urinalysis and culture testing, and prescribes targeted antibiotic therapy based on what the infection actually is, not just what it looks like on the surface.

The First Time

A lower urinary tract infection that goes untreated or is inadequately treated can progress to a kidney infection, which is significantly more serious and may require hospitalization. Getting treated promptly and completing the full course of antibiotics is the most effective way to stop an infection before it spreads.
Not all antibiotics work equally against all bacteria. Antibiotic resistance is increasingly common, which means a standard first-line antibiotic may not clear your specific infection. Urine culture and sensitivity testing identifies exactly which antibiotic your infection will respond to, making treatment more effective and less likely to require a second course.
If you get UTIs frequently, the answer is not just repeating the same antibiotic cycle. Dr. Akers evaluates the underlying pattern to identify contributing factors and create a prevention strategy, so you are breaking the cycle rather than just treating each infection as it occurs.

You Something Is Wrong
The classic symptoms of a lower urinary tract infection include a burning or stinging sensation when urinating, a frequent and urgent need to urinate even when the bladder is nearly empty, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, and pelvic pressure or discomfort. Some patients also notice blood in their urine.
These symptoms are uncomfortable and disruptive, but they are also reliable enough that many women who have had UTIs before recognize them quickly. If you have these symptoms, do not wait. Come in for same-day testing and treatment. The sooner you start antibiotics, the faster the infection clears.
However, not all urinary symptoms mean UTI. Bladder spasms, interstitial cystitis, yeast infections, and sexually transmitted infections can all cause overlapping symptoms. Dr. Akers evaluates your full symptom picture and tests appropriately to ensure you get the right diagnosis and the right treatment.

to Something More
If your UTI symptoms are accompanied by high fever, chills, back or flank pain, nausea, or vomiting, these signs may indicate the infection has reached the kidneys. Kidney infections require more aggressive antibiotic treatment and, in some cases, IV antibiotics or hospitalization.
Dr. Akers evaluates all patients presenting with urinary symptoms for signs of upper tract involvement. If kidney infection is suspected or confirmed, she manages your care appropriately, including escalating to IV treatment or coordinating hospitalization if your clinical picture warrants it.
